Investing to Cultivate the Future of Farming
Real food needs real farmers and real farmers need a real chance. To date, the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation has contributed more than $500,000 to support the next generation of farmers.
Farmers committed to farming in a sustainable and ethical way need help to have a chance to succeed – both for the sake of the future of real nutritious food and the communities that rely on these farms.
In the United States, young farmers are facing more challenges than ever:
- 40x more farmers were lost in recent years than gained
- 56% of farms lost money last year
- 100 million acres of U.S. farmland will change ownership in the next 5 years
The Chipotle Cultivate Foundation has partnered with Niman Ranch’s Next Generation Scholarship Fund and the National Young Farmers Coalition in an effort to cultivate the future of farming.
Niman Ranch's Next Generation Scholarship Fund
We have increased our 2020 pledge five-fold, with a 2020 pledge of $125,000. In addition to the scholarship fund, the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation is also partnering with Niman Ranch to sponsor education and training opportunities for young farmers.
National Young Farmers Coalition
On December 6th, the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation partnered with Chipotle to raise $250,000 for the National Young Farmers Coalition to help establish a seed grant program to support young farmers.
On January 1st, the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation donated $1 for every tweet with #farmer to the National Young Farmers Coalition for a total donation of $250,000.
